Where Halloween Dreams Come True
Experience the Joy of Halloween in These Charming Family-Friendly Neighborhoods
In 2010, I did the unthinkable: I moved away from my cherished Southern California, specifically beautiful North San Diego. The decision was based on personal reasons, partly to reconnect with family, and get to know my increasing nieces and nephews. I decided to go “all in,” and move back to my hometown of Johnstown PA, back to my “roots.” I even bought a house, not far from where I grew up!
I yearned for childhood memories: the places we played until the streetlights lit up or the church bells rang, the old schools, candy shops, our famous Incline Plane, and friends from high school and my parents' generation (family friends) who were still alive, as both my parents have passed.
That’s only for starters. But nothing came close to this unexpected experience…
To say I was in the “right place at the right time,” is an understatement. Driving towards Luzerne Street, I had forgotten that it was trick- or -treat night. But this was no ordinary trick- or- treat. This was Luzerne Street in Westmont, “the” Halloween Street of the city, perhaps even the entire state. EVERY house was not only beautifully decorated, but the entire street, adults as old as 90 to young families. It was the “happy place” of the year. No one had to worry about any danger to their kiddos. Most of the residents were already sitting outside with their treats. It was a sight to behold. To me, it was like a time capsule. I felt like I had just gotten into a time machine and was transported back to my childhood, competing with my seven siblings on who could land the biggest bag of candy. Seeing this sight, being there, actually brought me to tears. Fortunately, I had my camera and shot this video.
(Ignore the contact info at the end of the video it’s an old company I no longer use)
This may surprise you, but seventy percent of adults plan to celebrate Halloween 2024. The other 30%, well, they have their reasons. It’s not the holiday for everyone.
For everyone in So Cal, particularly in San Pedro, Long Beach, or Palos Verdes, let me introduce you to Patton Street in San Pedro..
Patton Street rivals Luzerne Street in Johnstown, particularly for families seeking a safe and festive Halloween atmosphere. I was amazed by the elaborate decorations I saw there two days ago. I only learned about it last year surprisingly when my middle-aged SpaceX executive neighbors mentioned they dressed up and “joined the Halloween fun.” At first I thought they were kidding, only to learn that it's not uncommon for adults to participate, (though they make sure to save the candy for the kids). Adults enjoy it because it allows them to relive their childhood.
I recommend the area between 25th Street and Patton, off Western Ave, extending to 10th or 9th Street. The street ends at Little Company of Mary Hospital on Seventh Street. It does tend to get hilly in some places, so consider driving if walking is an issue. The trees on that street are simply stunning. I also recommend going early, as it tends to get pretty crowded.
Stay safe, have fun, and Happy Halloween. If you can’t make it out for Halloween trick- or- treating, at least try to drive by and enjoy the festive decorations. And don’t forget, at Christmas, this street transforms into a winter wonderland with stunning homes and warm welcoming neighbors. It’s truly a sight to behold and a testament to the community spirit that makes Patton Street San Pedro so special.
For any of you wondering…
I only spent about a year in my hometown. While I enjoyed the beauty of the seasons and the first snowfall, shoveling it was less enjoyable. It was a wonderful year, but anyone who knows me understands that I’m a true California girl. After living bi-coastal in Central PA and Santa Barbara for a few years following my time in Western Pennsylvania, I eventually returned to California full time to marry my lost love from the '80s, who found me on LinkedIn. That’s a story for another time!
Happy Halloween!
